How to Get a Lot More Referrals

Earlier this year I asked birthing business owners about their biggest challenges in running their businesses. One of the top questions was about how to get more referrals.

If you are like most birthing business owners, you’ve been taught a bit about getting referrals in the classes that you took to develop your area of expertise. Unfortunately, you’ve probably been misinformed on how to get referrals.

Have you heard any of the following in your courses?:

  1. Once you have two or three births (clients, students), word-of-mouth will take over and you will have plenty of clients.
  2. Talking to the local doctors is the best way to get lots of referrals.
  3. Going to a networking meeting or joining a networking club will give you plenty of referrals.
  4. Email or call a few colleagues who work with expectant moms and they will start sending people your way.

If you are like most birthing business owners none of the methods listed above have worked very well. Sure, on occasion you might get a referral but they probably aren’t consistent.

There are two completely different sets of people who will give you referrals. The first is, of course, your past and current clients. The second is colleagues. When I refer to colleagues I’m not just referring to other doulas, childbirth educators and midwives but to other professionals who work with your ideal clients. Who are those people? Well, depending on the type of business you have, there are some 40 or more types of  businesses or professionals that are possibly connected to your business. There are pregnancy massage therapists, prenatal yoga instructors, chiropractors who specialize in the Webster technique, and acupuncturists who specialize in fertility just to name a few.

In this article, we will concentrate on getting referrals from colleagues.

The fact is that there is more to getting referrals then being passive and waiting for people to refer you. There is also more to getting referrals than meeting people once, telling them what you do and then sitting back and waiting for them to give you referrals.

Here are just a few reasons that colleagues give you referrals:

Rule #1: They like and trust you.

Rule #2: There is an incentive

Rule #3: They completely UNDERSTAND what you do or how your service/product benefits their potential clients.

The biggest two mistakes made by birthing business owners is that they think that by meeting someone once, they are going to get referrals. People generally will not remember you after only one or two meetings, calls or emails. That isn’t enough contacts or information for them to be able to give you a referral.

The second biggest mistake is that those that own their own birthing business suffer from knowing too much information. You know so much about the benefits of what you do but you likely fail to communicate it to a colleague who isn’t directly involved in birth.

A great example of this is a doula. If you tell someone that you are a doula and they have no knowledge of a doula, they will get that glazed-eye look. They don’t care that you are a doula. Being a doula is a feature. It doesn’t describe the benefit of what you do. They can’t easily figure out how the fact that you are a doula can help their clients. If that was their one and only contact with you, you’ll be unlikely to get a referral. (More information on benefits versus features on page 109 / CD #4 of “The Ultimate Guide To Growing Your Birthing Business” )

What if instead of telling that that you were a doula, you told someone that you help people reduce the chance of having a c-section by 50%?

Now you’ve stimulated their curiosity and have begun to communicate clearly what you do. You’ve helped them to understand your service. Of course there is more to communicating with someone  then just giving them one sentence about what you do but that is another article.

What is the solution to getting more referrals?

First, get a very strong marketing message that really helps people to understand the benefits of what you do. If you don’t understand how to construct a strong marketing message, it is time to take some marketing courses. “The Ultimate Guide to Growing Your Successful Birthing Business” shows you how to create a easy but very powerful marketing message.

Second, write a few articles about what you do so that you can email them to colleagues so that they become interested and further understand what you do. An article will give you more credibility as well especially if it contains stories of how you’ve helped past clients.

Third, create a plan for introducing yourself to more colleagues. This plan should contain a method that is repeatable even if you move to a new town. It should contain a way to contact colleagues on a regular basis. It should also have a way of educating them on the services you provide so that they can easily explain the benefits of what you do to others.

Although you will be contacting them on a regular basis, it should be done in such a way that won’t annoy them.

Make it easy on yourself so that you can leverage your time, money and resources. Don’t drive to meet each person. That takes way too much time. Use a combination of email, mail, phone calls and mini gatherings to successfully develop these relationships that will not only help your business but your colleagues businesses as well.

Perhaps it is easier to understand the referrals method with an example.

Kim Wildner, owner of Fearless Birthing ™, faced a difficult challenge 2 years ago when she was moving 8 hours away from her home town in Michigan to Wisconsin where her husband had just found a new job.

Her challenge was to re-launch her business as quickly as possible.

After a coaching session, we decided that her best bet was to follow the 9-Step, Menelli Method of Referrals (more information on The Menelli Method of Referrals can be found in The Ultimate Guide to Growing Your Successful Birthing Business or at www.birthingbusiness.com/Ultimate.)

Kim started by making a list of all of the colleagues in her new town that she thought would be helpful to know. This list included doulas, midwives, etc.

Next Kim compiled a list of actual names, addresses, phone numbers, emails and websites.

She made up postcards and sent them out.

Later she followed up (several more times with different emails, phone calls and mail.).

Did it work? YES! Kim not only met a lot of new people from the area in which she was moving but she had referrals and clients before even moving!

With a little bit of strategy, thought and planning you should be able to re-launch your own business and get a lot more referrals.

Here is to your successful birthing business…!

How to Attract Clients by Blogging

Last April I met two very interesting ladies, Patsi and Denise of the Blog Squad, at a marketing bootcamp. What intrigued me about them was that their business was all about blogs.

I’ve been very skeptical about blogs. I usually think of blogs as being written by people who only write about their kids and pets which is very interesting to your own family but generally not to everyone else.

I hadn’t really considered using a blog to increase the number of clients on my site nor had I thought about the impact and significance it could have for my students at The Birthing Business Institute.

I’ve been very wrong to over look blogs as a passing fad. Very wrong!

What continues to blow my mind is how effective they are for getting your name way high in the search engine, how incredibly easy they are to set up and use and how it can transform your business.

After meeting the Blog Squad, I decided that I had to learn more and that this would be a very important subject for all of the students of the Birthing Business Institute.

Please join me on Tuesday, October 16th as I grill The Blog Squad on how to get more visibility and how to turn more prospects to into your paying clients.

You can register at: http://www.blogsquadteleseminars.com/SM/

I’m excited. I know that I still have some things to learn to get more traffic onto my blog and website. I invited you to join me on the call! Learn from the best! Register at: http://www.blogsquadteleseminars.com/SM/

Here is to your success …

Boost Your Business with Ricki Lake’s The Business of Being Born

I saw the movie, The Buisiness of Being Born last night.

I was blown away and so excited that I didn’t get much sleep last night. I’m excited because I think that this movie has a potential for changing birth in this country and others.

I didn’t sleep because I had all of these marketing thoughts swirling around in my mind on how they can get this movie out there.

I also have also discovered some significant ways that this movie can help you to boost your business!

Ready?

Ok, Ricki Lake’s production house makes it pretty easy to get this movie and show it to the public. Ama Mama Midwifery Services in Encinitas, CA decided to rent the movie and were allowed to rent it for an entire week. They can only fit 20 people in the room at a time but they are having multiple showings. I think they are planning on showing this to 700-800 people before the week is out.

This has been a TREMENDOUS boost to their business in terms of visibility!

So far, they have had over 100 people view it. Of that, about 50% of the people said that they didn’t even know that this place existed. About 75% said that they didn’t know that they offered all of the services that they do.

One of the ladies I spoke to last night was a La Leche League leader in the same town and didn’t know that they existed.

If you want some of the best advertising you can get, call the producers of this movie and rent it to show to not only the birthing community but to your expectant and postpartum mothers (and fathers). Ask local nurses and doctors to come. Ask the media to come. Barbara of Ama Mama did all of this. I met several nurses last night from one of our bigger hospitals.

If you rent it, rent it for more than 1 day. Barbara is getting so many more people coming because the people who see it are telling their friends. Here is the info to get a screening: http://thebusinessofbeingborn.com/docs/screeningGuidelines.pdf

The second way of boosting your business with this movie is to go to as many showings as you can. You will meet other birthing professionals, moms, dads, etc. I was sitting next to Carol Yeh-Garner last night and I saw her hand out cards to at least a half a dozen people about her hypnobirthing classes.

I really hope that you and all of your clients and potential clients see this movie. I really hope that they can get this topic on Oprah!

By the way, here is a list of screenings:

Eat, Pray, Love – What does it have to do with your business? Everything!

Eat, Pray, Love – What does it have to do with your business? Everything!

Ok, I’ll give full disclosure here. I haven’t read the book yet. I’m planning on getting it this week. I’ve avoided a lot of Oprah’s book choices because the ones I’ve read in the past were so sad and depressing. This one looks pretty happy. I like happy! I need happy!

I do Tevo Oprah and watch it on occasion depending on the topic.

I thought that the author’s advice on 3 things you can do to feel good about yourself totally merged with my advice on growing your birthing business.

She says to ask yourself “What do I really really really want?”(for business, ask yourself what your goal is. Can’t get to your goal if you don’t know what it is – it gives you focus!)

Second she says to keep a happiness journal. What is the happiest thing that happened today? (Gratefulness is helpful for drawing the right people and events into your life – makes life more fun too!)

Third, change your mantra. If the mantra is “Why am I not getting clients” or “Why am I not making money” then that is your problem! Change your mantra. You become what/who you think about.

Examples of Thinking Outside the Box

In my course How to Grow Your Birthing Business Picture of How to Grow Your Birthing Businesshttp://www.birthingbusiness.com/growyourbusiness, I emphasize the importance of having a vision, a plan and thinking big!

I love to find new ideas of entrepreneurs thinking out of the box. Here is an example of one sent to me by Carol Yeh-Garner (website is AWellLivedLife.net)

This is a website with daily yoga classes that you can take ONLINE! Very clever. Even better, they are putting each class on DVD to sell.

http://www.yogatoday.com

Here are yoga instructors in Jackson, WY who were at a disadvantage as far as the number of people they could physically reach in their area. I just checked the stats and there are only 4000 women in the whole area. They didn’t let where they live get in the way. They are reaching the entire world! They are no longer disadvantaged! They are smart!

If you know of anyone thinking outside of the box in their business, I’d love to hear about it.

Check the blog daily! We have a lot of great business information that we will be posting!

Birth in the Media

One of my favorite shows is Grey’s Anatomy. I think I might like Private Practice even more.

I’m thrilled that they are talking about alternative medicine and especially that they have a midwifery student at the front desk.

Last night’s episode was very funny. The midwifery student (male) was inviting Naomi to his class to speak. She didn’t want to but Addison did. Addison is trying to prove herself to the midwifery student by listing off all of her technical degrees and knowledge and he just wants away saying that they don’t need her.

What I’m really hoping is that the writers are going to show something positive about birth. Wouldn’t it be great if Addison gets the shock of her life when she finds out that the body is not a lemon and that birth can be very serene instead of a medical emergency.

I’m putting this out there – here is a list of what I’d love to see happen this season:

1. Addison begins to like and have a lot of births!

2. We see positive births using Lamaze, Bradley, Birthing From Within, Hypnosis and other independent childbirth classes.

3. We see a successful VBAC (Vaginal Birth after Cesarean)

4. We hear Addison talk about how she was able to reduce her c-section rate to 5%.

5. We see a waterbirth – again that goes well!

6. We see Ina May Gaskin make a guest appearance and work with a mom to give birth.

7. We see a mom breastfeeding in public.

8. We see a doula at the birth who does a great job and has a great personality (no attitude that causes strife with the doctor and no conflict with the doula and the doctor or patient!)

9. Some patient reading MY book in the waiting room “Journey into Motherhood: Inspirational Stories of Natural Birth by Sheri Menelli”

10. A natural birth with twins that isn’t a medical emergency.

Hmm, I know I’m missing a lot here still. But this is my wish list.

If you know the writers, producers or actors, please pass on my list. :-)

Ok, what does this have to do with the business of birth?

I predict that if this show favorably depicts birth, we will see a major shift in birth in the US in the next 2 years!

If you want to change birth, you have to start with the media.

It is more acceptable to be gay now than it was 20 years ago. Why is that? I believe that it was from the media.

Can you have an impact? Yes, you can write articles for the pregnancy magazines. You can circulate birth stories that aren’t medical emergencies. You can get on TV and talk about the positive birth trends for 2007-8.

By the way, I’d love to get some comments/feedback about this. What do you think will happen on Private Practice with birth?

Until Tomorrow!

Babymoons

Have you ever heard of a “babymoon”? If you haven’t yet, listen up – it’s the hottest new trend for expectant parents!

A babymoon is a romantic vacation taken by a couple before their baby is born, usually between the fourth and seventh month of pregnancy. According to a recent poll by BabyCenter.com, 88 percent of pregnant women plan to take a vacation before the baby is born. And the hotels are noticing! Many resort hotels are already offering babymoon packages to expectant parents, complete with childbirth preparation classes and spa services.

These vacation packages are becoming quite popular. The Glorieta hotel in Coronado, California, hosted twelve babymoon couples in 2005, and the concept of babymoons was recently covered by USA Today and The Wall Street Journal. Journalists everywhere are taking notice, and the more they write, the bigger the trend will be… so get ready for it!

If you’re a birth-related professional, you can capitalize on this hot new trend. By offering your services as part of the babymoon package, you can get your foot in the door with dozens of potential clients. It’s a tremendous opportunity for anyone who teaches:

  • Childbirth classes
  • Prenatal yoga
  • Breastfeeding classes
  • Getting Ready for Baby classes
  • Pregnancy massage
  • Nutrition during pregnancy

“Hotels, spas and resorts are always looking for new ideas that will attract customers,” said Stacie Freshour of The Four Seasons Resort in Chicago. “Call the hotel and ask for the person in charge of public relations or marketing. Give them a little bit of your background and ask if you can find a way to work together (to produce a babymoon event).”

This may be one of the smartest things you can do to find new clients. By partnering with a hotel/spa, you boost your own business in four distinct ways:

  1. Credibility – You get to piggyback on the power of an established reputation, and this reflects really well on your business. If a resort or hotel associates their name with yours, that’s a major marketing breakthrough… especially if you end up working with a hotel like The Four Seasons.
  2. Referrals – When you align yourself with a hotel that does babymoon events, you get a constant stream of new clients with money to spend.
  3. Publicity – Doesn’t the term “babymoon” sound romantic and cute? That’s what these hotels are hoping! And they’re going to promote it to attract buyers. That means a hotel’s public relations team is already working for you! If you decide to take this a step further and conduct your own PR campaign (press releases, pitching stories to journalists, posters, etc.), ask the PR team at the hotel for help. Since your work PR benefits their company as well, they just might work with you.
  4. Prices – Additional credibility and press exposure always supports higher prices. Plus, the benefit of having you on-site to conduct classes means you can justify a higher price for traveling to the hotel.

Can you see the possibilities for your business? They’re huge! More business, more money, more credibility – where can you possibly go wrong? Only one way: by ignoring this opportunity step into the public eye.
